Hike to the oldest living trees on Earth
As you tour the
Eastern Sierra Scenic Byway,
make a stop in Big Pine, where you can get up close to some of the
world's oldest trees — some dating back more than 40 centuries. These
gnarled and twisted trees, located in the Inyo Forest's White Mountains,
are fascinating and beautiful.
The best time to visit the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest is in
July and August. Bring along a picnic, check out the old miners cabins
at Mexican Mine, or hike along the Methusulah Trail — where you'll pass
by the oldest living tree on Earth. The Visitor Center sells books and
offers interpretive programs daily in the summer, and weekends in spring
and fall.
