Here in California, bigger isn't always better, especially when it comes
to hotels.
To that end, one of my favorite boutique hotels is the Bay Shores Peninsula Hotel in Orange County.
This laid-back, friendly Newport Beach hotel is stocked with all the comforts of
home, from their complimentary breakfast buffet in the morning, to the
fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies in the afternoon.
Owner Fred Pratt and his longtime staff pride themselves on customer
service, and it shows. Each of the hotel's 25 rooms and suites are
super-clean and comfortable, with free WiFi, HDTV and air conditioning.
I love the whole surfer vibe here, from the original surf art by John
Severson (Hall of Fame Surfer and founder of Surfer Magazine) to the
wide selection of Surfer magazines in the lobby.
Kids will love the original 1960s caged elevator. Take it up to the
rooftop sun deck, where you'll enjoy sweeping views of the ocean and bay.
For a special treat, book the Bay Suite. Perfect for families, the suite
has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a full kitchen, dining and living
room. The large deck, which overlooks Newport Bay, is the perfect
place to soak up the sun.
While many resorts try to nickel-and-dime their guests, the Bay Shores
Peninsula Hotel includes everything in its room rates. Check out one of
their free DVDs to enjoy in your room, or print out your boarding passes
from the lobby computer.
You'll also enjoy free local phone calls, newspaper delivery, business
services and parking. And if the lot happens to be full, they'll even
feed your parking meter!
When you're ready to hit the waves, the hotel offers free towels, boogie
boards, umbrellas, chairs and beach toys. From there, it's just one
block to the famous surf at 18th Street beach, or the calm waters of
Newport Bay.
