Berkeley Travel Guide

This "free thinking" city, home to California's oldest UC college, is known for its political protests and hippie movement during the 1960s. Today, Berkeley remains one of the most liberal cities in the nation, but it's also known for its cultural and culinary contributions.

For good eats, be sure to visit Chez Panisse, Alice Waters' mothership of California cuisine, or the vegan charcuterie at Gather (510-809-0400), led by Esquire's chef of the year Sean Baker. Good microbrews are found at Triple Rock Brewery and Alehouse (510-843-2739), or enjoy the gourmet food court at Epicurious Garden.

If you want to explore like a local, rent a bike and tour the town. Catch a show at Berkeley Repertory Theatre (510-647-2949), explore the U.C. Berkeley Botanical Garden, learn to golf at Tilden Park, or go rock climbing at Indian Rock Park (510-981-6700). For stunning views of the city, don't miss a trip to the top of Sather Tower, a 1914 landmark that rises 307 feet above the city. Have the kids along? Explore the Adventure Playground or fly a kite at Berkeley Marina (160 University Avenue).
