Step back in time with an overnight stay on the Star of India.
STORY BY Veronica Hill / CaliforniaTravelExpert.com
The historic Star of India, which dates back to 1863, is the world's oldest active sailing ship. Docked at the Maritime Museum in San Diego, the ship was known as Euterpe until 1901. She made voyages to India, New Zealand, California and Chile — sailing around the world 21 times.
Today, you can tour the ship deck and captain's quarters with your museum admission, or join one of their
family sleepovers, held on select weekends during the summer. The evenings include living history performances from the 1870s, along with lively sea chanteys and lessons in navigation and sail-raising. A highlight is the "rat stew" dinner.
The San Diego Maritime Museum is located at 1492 North Harbor, San Diego, CA. Hours are 9-8 daily. Admission is $14. Overnight family sleepovers are $70 per person. Tall Ship rides are $42 adults; $34 (ages 13-17); $31 (under 12). $55 Cannon Battle; $35 (children under 12). Coastal voyages are $2,100 per person. Call (619) 234-9153.
