Costco Food

TOP SPOT: Budget Friendly
Summary: For cheap eats on the go, nothing beats a quick bite at the Costco Food Court.

Location: Costco has locations throughout California.

Price Range: $

Pros: One of the best bargain meals in California

Cons: Not the healthiest food, but there are some options, such as the Chicken Caesar Salad

We've been loyal Costco members for more years than I can remember.

And even though I appreciate fine dining and gourmet restaurants as much as the next gal, sometimes there's nothing I want more than a slice of gooey Costco pizza and an ice-cold Coke after a long walk up and down the aisles.

I've seen the Costco food court menu evolve over the years to include churros, blended mocha freezes and turkey wraps. But the best value has always been their $1.50 hot dog and 20 oz. drink special.

Once you get your hot 1/4-pound Hebrew National All-Beef hot dog or Polish sausage, make your way to the condiments bar, where you can choose from fresh chopped onions, relish, deli mustard, regular mustard and ketchup. And yes, you get free refills on that soda!

Costco pizza comes in cheese, pepperoni and combo versions. Buy it buy the generous slice, at $1.99, or buy the whole 18-inch pizza for $9.95.

One of my favorite healthy menu items — the Costco Turkey Wrap (made with whole wheat tortilla wrap, spinach, tomatoes and havarti cheese) — was recently taken off the menu. However you can still order their Chicken Caesar Salad, topped with sliced chicken, cherry tomatoes, croutons, parmesan cheese and Caesar dressing.

Another delicious — and yes, fattening — option is the Costco Chicken Bake. This Calzone-like dish is filled with diced cooked chicken, bacon, cheese and Ranch dressing. It's wrapped in Costco pizza dough, sprinkled with parmesan cheese, and then baked until it's crispy and golden. Pure comfort food.

A recent addition to the Costco food court menu is the Costco Carne Asada Bake recipe, made with USDA choice seasoned beef, pico de gallo (tomato salsa), guacamole and shredded cheese.

If you're just in the mood for something sweet, try the Berry Smoothie, Mocha Freeze Latte, or the Frozen Nonfat Yogurt (available in chocolate, vanilla or swirl).

I love the Very Berry Sundae (soft-serve vanilla yogurt topped with berry swirls) and the Hand Dipped Ice Cream Bar with Roasted Almonds. They're just like the Balboa Bars you'll find in Newport Beach.

Though Costco is a members warehouse, many of the food courts are located outside the building, making them accessible to the public. Costco has locations throughout California.

I work in a costco food court, so I want to point out. The Turkey wrap wasn't all that healthy. It boasted over 800 calories and not that much good nutrition. Our salad isnt very great either. The Cesar cup inside is one of the most fattening items in the food court and each salad has an entire head of romaine lettuce which many are eating in a single sitting. Its great, of you don't eat it all at once and don't use all the dressing. If cour were to eat either item in a single sitting, you would actually be better off with most other items in the food court.

I loved their Turkey Wraps, so sad they got rid of them. The Costco in Orem, Utah just started selling Gelato at their concessions. It is divine. You get three huge scoops in a waffle come for $1.50!
